Consume Zero Reset
Jun 20-26, 2021Jun 20, 2021
Today I started a one-week Consume Zero challenge. I have found that lately I've been watching too many movies and have gotten distracted too often by many other forms of entertainment, such as podcasts. I do believe there is a time and a place for these things, but I have recently sacrificed creative time for entertainment, and that is not something I want to get in the habit of. Therefore, I've decided to do a reset.
Based on my past experience with Consume Zero, I decided it is the best way I know to accomplish this reset. For one week I will not consume anything unless it pertains directly to me creating something. This means I will not watch TV, listen to podcasts or music, read books or articles, or browse photos or social media. (I no longer have any social media accounts, so this last one is easy.)
One thing I am allowed is to check products I've been waiting to purchase on Amazon during Prime Day (June 21-22). I am in dire need of an SSD for important backups, so if one goes on sale I want to snag it. Oddly enough, it was during prime day that I did my last Consume Zero challenge as well.

So far the challenge has been going great. I've been bored, it's true, but in that boredom I have decided to do things I have been putting off for way too long. Some of these things are small, like scraping old stickers off my car windshield, and some are big, like finally getting around to making a YouTube channel I've been contemplating forever. Today I even went out to take photos, which I haven't done in months.
However, with the light has come a few shadows. I've realized how addicted I am to some of these forms of entertainment. Espcially movies. Earlier today I was thinking maybe if so-and-so goes perfectly, I can allow myself to watch a short TV show. I squashed that thought quickly, but it hasn't been the only one to pop up. Hopefully by the end of the week these thoughts will be fewer not more.

I ended the challenge today. I absolutely loved it. I was more productive and creative this past week than I have been in several months combined. I started two new YouTube channels and continued working hard on Motherbored. I hope to keep this going longer.

Today, about a week after this Consume Zero challenge ended, as I was watching a movie on Netflix as I have the past few nights, I thought to myself, "I like myself better when doing Consume Zero." That was a huge revelation to me and I decided to do a lot more Consume Zero, perhaps even 6 days per week for the forseeable future.
