Consume Zero
- What is Consumer Zero?
-
Consume Zero is a community effort to cure ourselves
of the insatiable need for all forms of media, not
just social media. If you want to detox from TV,
movies, podcasts, articles, and even books, at least
for a short time, you have come to the right place.
-
Consume Zero was not created as a financial
challenge (i.e. consuming goods), but it can be if
you need it to be.
- What are the rules?
-
There are no rules! Consume Zero is not meant to be
a one-size-fits-all practice. The details and
guidelines are determined by you and what you are
trying to accomplish.
-
To make it a bit easier, I have set out a list of
commonly used guidelines
you can incorporate into your own Consume Zero
challenge.
- How long does the detox last?
-
What did I just say about rules? There is no set
length for this experiment. However, I recommend
starting with a day. A day is far tougher than it
sounds the first time you do it.
-
Once you make it through a day, try a three-day
experiment. Try to plan a replacement activity for
those three days.
-
If you get through that and want to keep going, a
week should really get you out of your routine of
consumption and give you time to replace those
habits with more fulfilling hobbies.
-
A month is a huge challenge. This should really get
you out of the bad habits developed over a lifetime
of media addiction and guide you back to the path of
pursuing what brings you true happiness.
-
A year is a ridiculous feat. Hats off to anyone who
has undertaken this challenge. If you do complete a
year, I will be happy to post your write-up on the
experiment in our Hall of Fame.
- Keep a journal
-
I recommend keeping a journal during your Consume
Zero experiment. Taking notes will let you come back
later to see what worked, what you could improve on,
what you missed most, what you would do differently
next time, what you learned, etc.

- Who created Consume Zero?
-
I,
Ricky Kresslein, thought up Consume Zero and made this guide, but
I think it is probably a mash-up of many ideas
floating around out there that gathered together in
my brain.
